Light Painting

Light painting, is one of the most exciting camera technics that uses the combination of exposure, shutter speed and a source of light. And with your DSLR, you will be able to create magical pictures. But first, in order to do something, you have to know how its done.

In all DSLRs there is this thing called shutter speed. It's actually the rate of your shutter closing and opening, which can be set to be auto or manual(bulb). This is the most important key in making a light painting. Second, is exposure, this will tell you have much light taken in the sensor, so if you’re taking picture in the dark and you don’t  want the natural light to be in the picture. Therefore, the exposure must be set right( I will tell you in later posts). In order to do a light painting you need the darkest room or open space (to take a wide angle picture) to make the picture. The light could simply be a touch light or a led light. For the first version we used a handphone flash light.
.
Now since you got all the material, lets start. The main thing in making a light painting pic is improvising. Once you know how to take pic, improvise. That will lead you to great pics. Now to take a pic, you need to:

1.       Set up your tripod and decide the angle. You must have a tripod so that you won’t have a shaky image at the end of the shoot.

2.       The turn camera to manual mode of shutter mode (if you have one). Then with a 1 sec shutter mode, take a blank pic. From the image you can see whether any natural light is taken in or not. If it does have natural light in it, then lower down your exposure until you get a black pic.

3.       Now you are ready to take a pic. Ask a friend to stand in the frame and just aim the right at him. Snap the image to get the frame that your friend is standing.

4.       Next, turn your camera on self-timer, this is because even a slight shake when you're doing the light painting will result in a bad image. Then, change you shutter speed to 8 sec or more.

5.       Now is the real deal, ask your friend to move the light in a direction as he like and snap the pic. Ask him to continue moving until the shutter closes.

6.       Now you will have a pic of moving random light

Now your ready, explore this technique and enjoy, make sure you try out other moving light by applying these rules.

 Enjoy,
LETS BE AWESOME

What is a DSLR?

"What You See Is What You Get",
Simply put, that is what a DSLR is all about. DSLR stands for digital single lens reflex ,and with this you will already have an idea that it has something to do with lenses and reflex. That's what makes it different compared to digital cameras that are flooding the markets nowadays.
This is how it works.

  1. Light passes through the lens and strikes a mirror (green)
  2. The mirror reflects the light up to a focusing screen
  3. Light passes through the focusing screen and enters a block of glass called a pentaprism (orange)
  4. The pentaprism reflects the image so that you can see it in the viewfinder
  5. When you take a photo, the mirror flips up and a shutter (blue) opens that exposes the digital sensor (red) to light
But, every device has a downside to it and for the DSLR, there are a few.
First, DSLR needs constant cleaning. There are different parts to as well, such as the lenses, the sensor and many more. Cleaning is the most important part as it preserves the quality of the picture that is to be taken.
Second, dont ever think that having a DSLR means that u can always snap great picture. Its a misconception that many of new DSLR user get. There are million things that you need to learn about DSLR when you can to take a picture.
Third, its not easy to move with a DSLR. This is because they are "fragile" devices and you will need to have the correct bag for it. Your movement will be limited compared to having a digital camera.
The advantages?
Its a DSLR.....that's all.
My personal advice, if you are good at taking pictures with a normal mobile camera, you have the passion to created magic with your pictures, then go for it. It a good investment if you wanna go pro....... and I personally will encourage people who are like that to buy a DSLR.

Simple editing tips

Editing, is one of the most important parts in an amateur photographer's pictures. For a new photographer, there are many softwares out there in the market that are considered to be good. But honestly for me, I prefer doing simple colour correction using Photoscape. It is because its simple and easy to use. But if you wish to go professional, its always Adobe. I know it takes time to learn and master Adobe but in the mean time, this is a good start to photo editing; simple photo editing. However, you need improvise on the features to get the preferred results.

You get it for free at www.photoscape.org  . But always keep in mind that it should be only for temporary because in the end, its best to switch for the better ~ to Adobe. That is a ultimate software for major works. Here is one of the sample of one of the features in photoscape.
